Dear Etranger is about a forty-four year old who is devoted in his second marriage life. He has two daughters from his current wife’s previously marriage and another child from his ex-wife who lives with her. His wife is pregnant with their child but faces challenge when the oldest daughter wants to see her biological father. The protagonist compares the daughter with his daughter from his ex-wife and suggests an abortion to his wife. Mishima Yukiko, director of A Stitch of Life(2014) is underestimated for her skills. Her directing style is classic and elegant and strives for accuracy. Dear Etranger questions the meaning of family in today’s constantly changing society. The film portrays a subtle consideration of whether from parent and a child’s perspective, if living with others can be tied together to being obligated as a family. [KIM Youngjin]
