In this adaptation of Nikolai Leskov´s novella 『Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk』 a 19th century young bride is sold into marriage to a middle-aged man.

  • Review

Nikolai Leskov’s novel Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk?more known for Shostakovich’s opera, this piece is about of a young bride who was sold to a middle aged men for marriage and her dramatic desire during the absence of her husband. Driven by her strong desire, even the film portrays the way Lady Macbeth oppresses men; however, all her energy is taken away by the patriarchal reality and she goes after to gain that back. Her femme fatale style in order to survive by lying and committing crime goes beyond the expectation of era and moves the audience. More than anything, director William Oldroyd focuses on female image aligned with Lady Macbeth’s actions and decisions. Florence Pugh’s acting the role of Lady Macbeth is also something that cannot be missed. [Lee Sang-yong]
