  • Review

Tony Conrad was an American avant-garde director as well as an experimental filmmaker, musician, and video artist. This documentary pays tribute Conrad who passed away on April 9th, 2016. In the mid 60’s, Conrad became the pioneer of the structural film with The Flicker. During the 70’s, the structural film became a major trend in experimental films in the US. Conrad was one of the front-runners in the field. During the structural films´ heydays, however, he already moved on to video and performance arts, diversifying his body of work. He was also a musician while teaching new kind of art to others. His life that cannot be summed up in a single word is in fact an avant-garde for the avant-garde. This film explores the legacy of Tony Conrad to persuade the audience the nowness of his avant-garde works. [LEE Sang-yong]
