Village of Haze which represents literary imagination is based on Yi Mun-yol’s 『An Anonymous Island』. Soo-ok, a graduate of Teachers’ College, is appointed at an elementary school in a remote village. All the villagers are connected by blood and they welcome her with kindness. However, there is an odd tension between the outsider and the locals. On her first day of work, she meets a young man named Kkae-cheol. He is a little slow and foolish but seems like a necessary evil for this strange community. When Soo-ok finds out her boyfriend did not visit her, she is greatly disappointed. Like the original novel, the film explores the human’s desire and weakness. Soo-ok is also the subject for one’s desire and projected on Kkae-cheol ‘s foolish and crazy behavior. Kkae-cheol represents the dark side of the community and the outsider. [JANG Byungwon]
