  • Review

The Surrogate Woman continues the tradition of telling brutal stories of women in Korean film history. From a distinguished family, Sang-gyu is the succeeding grandson of the Shin family. Having no descendants for 10 years, Sang-gyu’s mother decides to bring Oknyo as the surrogate mother. Oknyo promises to deliver a boy and comes on board. However, as the two fall for each other, Sang-gyu’s wife is filled with jealousy. After many complications, Oknyo delivers a boy, but her obsession toward Sang-gyu brings great agony. The Surrogate Woman is filled with Song Gil-han’s unique view?pain and suffering is a rite of passage that one has to undergo to complete oneself. It comes to the climax when one’s life is complete from the restriction of one’s self-respect. The use of Korean traditional-style houses makes the film unique and original. [JANG Byungwon]
